June Community Letter from the CEO: A message from Tom Hunter

By June 20, 2023July 10th, 2023No Comments

Dear tenants,

June 1 marks our first birthday and I am proud to celebrate one year of progress together.

This past year showed the value of working closely with tenants, staff, and community partners. Working with you has helped us greatly. We know more now about where we can do more. We also know more about what works and what does not. We know that listening to you makes our actions stronger and helps us to better meet your needs.

The Quality Improvement Projects are a great example of this. We have heard a lot about how to reduce pests. We have also heard how to improve the way we work with tenants and how to help tenants feel more secure at home. We already have a team in place to support tenants who need help during pest treatment. We are also doing more staff training to improve how we support you as you age in place. We will keep working on areas important to you and keep you updated on our progress.

We are working to be more inclusive, diverse and fair. One step we have taken is to address anti-Black racism. Working with the Centre for Advancing the Interests of Black People, we have provided training and tools to support our Confronting Anti-Black Racism (CABR) Strategy.  In April, we launched staff training to support our Black staff and tenants. We know there is much more work we must do to meet the needs of other groups as well. This is a journey and we will do the work to improve in these areas.

On April 27, our Board of Directors approved a set of priorities for the next 12 to 18 months. These will guide us. They will help us focus on the unique needs of seniors. They will help us make sure we provide quality, affordable housing. We are working on an easy reference version for tenants and partners. We look forward to sharing it with you this summer.

Last but not least, I’m delighted to share with you our second Annual Report. It shares what we achieved in 2022 and how we plan to reach our future goals. The full report is available on our website.

June is Seniors Month and a perfect time to honour you and all that you have done to help us get here. Special thanks to those who give freely of their time to help us in extra special ways. Whether you are a tenant rep, a past member of a focus group or a member of the Senior Tenants Advisory Committee, thank you.

Looking ahead, I want to thank you for the trust that you’ve placed in us over the past year. On behalf of the entire team, we are truly grateful for your ongoing guidance and support.

We could not do this work without you.

Sincerely,

Tom Hunter
